What's the difference between the SMTP-based and API-based?

API-based connections are generally faster and more optimised as they use HTTP protocol to communicate

• SMTP-based connections use SMTP connections, which are generally slow due to network limitations. They are also very chatty, so they go through a string of exchanged messages before accepting your email.
